Lions Beaten in Home Opener, Drop to 0-2 on the Season
The crowd was on its feet radiating energy and excitement as their Lusher Lions Varsity Football Team was set to take on the McMain Mustangs in a long-awaited home opener. Banners lined the stands in support of the Lions, and the sellout crowd was emanating nothing but positive energy and hoping for the boys to bring home a victory. The Lions came into the game hungry for a win after losing to the Bonnabel Bruins at Bonnabel 50-28.
McMain was also hungry after losing to Newman 34-7. Both offenses struggled in the first quarter, with Lusher ending the quarter leading 3-0 thanks to a 36-yard field goal by sophomore kicker Enzo Reginelli. But the game was not at all over. The Mustangs would come out firing on all cylinders in the second quarter with two touchdowns to take a 14-3 lead into halftime. The Mustangs would continue to dictate the game in the second half, scoring one touchdown each quarter to eventually win the game 27-3.
The Lions were frustrated with their performance. Senior captain and wide receiver Chad Britton summarized the game, saying, “We started off great pushing the pace. All we need to do is finish.” Britton was electric in the return game as he had two major kick returns to kickstart the Lusher offense, although one was called back due to offsetting penalties. Penalties were also a problem for Lusher as they committed 13 penalties for a total of 68 yards. The Lions were only able to muster 40 yards on the ground, which made life difficult for sophomore quarterback Arnold Little, as he was able to throw for only 120 yards, meaning the Lions had only 160 total yards of offense compared to McMain’s 256.
The Lions are looking to right the ship with a short week of practice before heading out to Hoss Memtsas Stadium in Harvey to take on the 1-1 Thomas Jefferson Jaguars on Thursday and then host the White Castle Bulldogs (9/21) and the vaunted Newman Greenies (9/28) at Brees Family Field before hitting the road again to play St. Charles Catholic to kick off district play. Go, Lions’ football!
