Senior Lusher Lifer Gavriella Smith won the state singles championship Tuesday (4/27/21), scoring 6-0, 6-0 shutouts throughout the tournament! This was Gavriella’s 5th state championship in an INCREDIBLE high school career, and she might have broken state records with 6 straight if Covid hadn’t cancelled the 2020 season.
From this Nola.com write-up:
Nobody had a more dominant two days at the state tournament than Lusher’s Smith, who ended her high school career with a fifth consecutive state title.
By defeating North Vermilion junior Emma Koch, Smith won five matches over the two days at state without losing a game — finishing 6-0, 6-0 in all of them. In a semifinal earlier Tuesday, Smith defeated Neville sophomore Lauren Graham.
The Lusher Girls team placed 2nd in the Division II State Championships, out of 46 competing schools, after taking the Regional title earlier this month (the boys team were also Regional champs).
On top of winning their region, the boys team won the regional doubles championship, which ended up being Lusher vs. Lusher. Anthony Radka and Nico Lupin defeated Daniel Porea and Hector Alday-Jover for the title.
