Letter from High School Principal, Dr. Steve Corbett:
Families and Students,
I hope you are all enjoying the start of summer vacation. On Thursday we graduated 147 seniors from the Class of 2019. The Class of 2019 has had a record setting year, earning a staggering $38 million in merit-based scholarships. That number is the largest of any school in New Orleans and may likely be the largest in the entire state. That is an average of $258,000 per student, which is over $100,000 more per student than the school with the second highest merit-based aid in New Orleans.
Those numbers are remarkable, but not surprising. Colleges and Universities are searching for multi-talented individuals, interdisciplinary learners who can leverage their diverse passions and interests in a complex world. Lusher students have the grades and test scores top colleges are looking for, but they also have unique abilities that admissions representatives are attracted to. This year’s class graduated 56 Certificate of Artistry students, 59 Lusher Scholars, and 46 Da Vinci Scholars. These pursuits extend Lusher students beyond the standard high school curriculum, and post-secondary institutions have taken notice.
We’ve also learned that Lusher is home to the highest percentage of graduating seniors in New Orleans earning a 30 or higher on the ACT. Thirty-two percent of the Class of 2019 has accomplished this. Add this to the National Blue Ribbon, US News and World Report Gold Medal, highest proportion of National Merit Finalists in New Orleans, highest number of QuestBridge and Posse Scholars in New Orleans, and Gambit’s Best NOLA High School…and you can see why we’ve been so proud of what our community accomplished this year.
None of this would be possible without the incredible effort of our teachers and staff. Our faculty have been the catalyst behind these accomplishments, working tirelessly every single day to ensure that our students receive the best possible education. We’re fortunate to work with such talented educators.
Next year, approximately 90% of Lusher’s 8th grade class will continue their education at Lusher High School. The Class of 2020, an exceptional group of talented students, will lead our school towards another year of excellence and good fortune. We are excited to see where the 2019-2020 school year takes us.
As we close out the year, I’d like to thank each of you for putting your faith in our high school. This is a special place that is growing stronger and stronger every year. Wishing each of you a wonderful summer.
